The U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Tuesday approved the first Viagra for men over the age of 40, marking a new era in medical treatment for erectile dysfunction.
The agency also approved the first treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension, or PAH, which affects millions of men around the world. Viagra, also known by the brand name Sildenafil, is prescribed to men over the age of 18 who suffer from this condition. The drug, sold under the brand name Revatio, is also approved for those men suffering from erectile dysfunction, according to FDA.
“This approval marks a significant milestone in the treatment of erectile dysfunction,” said Janet Woodcock, secretary of Health and Human Services. “The agency also recognized the significant impact of Viagra on men suffering from PAH who had not yet achieved or completed the desired outcome from their previous treatments.”
According to the agency, Viagra can cause side effects such as headache, dizziness, flushing, indigestion and nasal congestion.
“The approval of Viagra is a positive sign that the drug is working, and we’re excited to continue working with the FDA to continue to bring men to treatment who suffer from this condition to help improve their quality of life,” Woodcock added.
